One was killed and another wounded early Monday when the two fall into a trash compactor trucks of garbage that they had slept the South side, officials said.
Waste management employees of Texas driving the truck compactor at around 4: 30 Monday morning pick up the trash behind the retail center strip on Southeast military Drive block 1000, said police Sgt. Malcolm Guidry.
Two people believed to be homeless and trying to stay warm to sleep in the trash, Guidry said, but the driver did not notice them until Richard Salinas, 43, came out of the truck and in the window. Salinas told the driver to stop, Guidry said, but others, in his 50s, had already been hurt.
"The driver stopped, and that person is still responsive-he was banging on the side of the truck, yelling, ' Get me, '" said Guidry.
First responders and paramedics working on called the men, reportedly worse conditions before he was taken to a military medical center of San Antonio. He was declared dead at about 6 a.m., said Guidry.
